On Thursday, September 8, the Boston Globe published an article, “A Trail of Secrets and Death: A Crisis of Conscience, with Lives on the Line”. The article features a New Hampshire physician who accumulated the highest number of malpractice settlements involving surgical deaths in the last two decades. Colleagues described feeling powerless in the face of an administration which favored silence despite a growing number of deaths at the hospital. Verrill partner David Lazarus told the Boston Globe “Historically, the government has tended to shy away from second-guessing medical decision-making. It becomes a battle of the experts.”.
