Hannaford Energy, LLC: New England Power Pool Membership

Verrill represents Hannaford Bros. Co. (Hannaford) in the creation, permitting and licensing of its new energy marketing subsidiary, Hannaford Energy, LLC (Hannaford Energy). Hannaford is a large food retailer that operates over 170 supermarkets in New England and New York. In 2009, Hannaford formed Hannaford Energy to supply electricity to Hannaford's supermarkets in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. In order for Hannaford Energy to purchase electric energy at wholesale and then resell the energy to its affiliated stores, we secured New England Power Pool (NEPOOL) membership, as well as market-based rate authorization from FERC. In addition to the NEPOOL and FERC approvals, we obtained the necessary licenses for Hannaford Energy to operate as a competitive electricity supplier from the Maine Public Utilities Commission and the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities.
