In memory of former Verrill Attorney Judge Alan H. Nevas

It is with great sadness that we share the news of former Verrill attorney and federal judge Alan H. Nevas’ passing on April 19, 2025. Judge Nevas’ extraordinary career spanned decades in the private and public sectors and leaves an indelible mark on the legal community.

“Judge Nevas’ wisdom, steady hand, and dedication to justice have inspired many, and his legacy will endure for years to come,” remarked Scott Anderson, Verrill’s Managing Partner. “As we mourn this great loss, we also take the time to celebrate his life and share our heartfelt gratitude for his immense contributions to the legal field.”

From his early years in private practice, to his service as the United States Attorney and as a distinguished federal judge for the District of Connecticut, a role in which he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan, Judge Nevas has consistently demonstrated a commitment to justice, integrity, and service. His leadership and keen legal acumen continued to be sought after during his post-judicial work as a mediator, arbitrator, and special investigator, where he presided over numerous matters of great significance, including his appointment by Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell to chair the state’s investigation into the causes of the explosion at the Kleen Energy power plant in Middletown, Connecticut, and to chair the committee that allocated funds to families impacted by the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.
