Muskie Fund Honors Verrill Dana’s William Harwood for 30 years of Leadership and Advocacy

June 6, 2017 Press Releases

(June 6, 2017) – Verrill Dana's William Harwood was honored with the Hon. Edmund S. Muskie Access to Justice Award for his leadership in the community and the impact it has had in furthering access to justice.

Harwood's commitment to public service dates back more than 30 years, when he joined the Legal Services for the Elderly Board in 1983 and soon after served as the Board Chair for two years. Since then, he has served on the Board of Trustees for multiple organizations and as the Chair for the Maine Bar Foundation and Maine State Bar Association 10th Annual Campaign for Justice. He also received the 1999 American Bar Association Pro Bono Publico Award and the 1994 Maine State Bar Association Dana Award, named for Verrill Dana attorney Hon. Howard Dana Jr. (Ret.) for his work in promoting legal services for those who are unable to afford them.

His true passion, however, has been serving as an advocate for handgun safety. He is currently the Board Chair of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and has been a member of its Board of Trustees since 2004. In addition, he was the former Chair of the American Bar Association's Special Committee on Gun Violence and the former President of the Maine Citizens Against Handgun Violence.

The Hon. Edmund S. Muskie Access to Justice Award, presented each spring, honors commitment to the public good, advanced through hard thinking, deep feeling, a voice of eloquent civility and a passion for justice.

Harwood is the fourth Verrill Dana attorney to receive the Muskie Award since 1996. Hon. Howard Dana, Jr., Roger Putnam, and Robert Hirshon have all been honored.
