Rockweed Harvest Case is Win for Landowners
A March 21 Mount Desert Islander article entitled, "Rockweed Harvest Case is Win for Landowners" reporting on a Washington County Superior Court ruling in a case brought by three landowners, represented by Gordy Smith, against Acadian Seaplants Ltd. regarding the ownership and harvesting rights of rockweed growing in intertidal zones. The court ruled that rockweed growing in intertidal zones is the property of landowners. Gordy commented that his clients "are very happy with the decision." It is expected that the decision will be appealed to the Maine Supreme Court.
