August 9, 2024 Press Releases

BOSTON, Massachusetts – Verrill is pleased to announce it was recognized as a 2024 Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly Empowering Women Award recipient for its strong commitment to supporting and elevating women attorneys.

Verrill’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is ingrained in its history and firm culture and continues to this day. Currently, the firm has more than 160 attorneys across seven offices, two-fifths are women, along with a third of its equity partnership, which is significantly higher than the nationwide average.

Verrill’s senior leadership team is comprised of more than 60 percent women, including the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer. Verrill fosters professional development and mentorship through its Associate Development Committee and a variety of affinity and related groups, including Women Empowered, LGBTQIA+, and Working Parents & Caregivers.

Over 30 years ago, the firm elected Judith M. Coburn as managing partner, making her the first female managing partner in the state of Maine. Coburn also served as a Practice Group Chair and a member of the firm’s Executive Board during her tenure. Recently, Gene Dahmen received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Boston Bar Association (BBA) during their Law Day Celebration. A trailblazer in the legal field, Dahmen was the first woman to be elected President of BBA, making her the 64th successor to John Adams in that position. Dahmen was one of only three women in her law school class at the University of Virginia. She then went on to become the first female president of its alumni organization.

Outside of the office and in the community, Verrill is a longstanding supporter of both the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute and the Women Presidents’ Organization.

Over the years, Verrill has been recognized nationally as a top firm for female attorneys by Law360 as a “Ceiling Smasher” and National Law Journal’s “NLJ 500 Women’s Scorecard.”
