Verrill Celebrates 20 Years of Growth and Success in Boston’s Competitive Legal Market

BOSTON, Mass. — This month, Verrill celebrates its 20-year anniversary in the Boston market.

While Verrill was founded in Maine in 1862, the firm launched an office in Boston in September 2004 with just one attorney and two staff members. Over the past two decades, the firm’s Boston office has grown significantly, including through a combination with Rackemann, Sawyer, & Brewster in 2022, which had its own rich history of nearly 150 years in the city. Today, approximately 75 attorneys and 45 staff members are resident in Verrill’s Boston office.

“Our Boston office was originally opened to better serve our existing clients who were also growing regionally. We’ve successfully done that and more over the last two decades with not only robust business coming from clients based in the state, but also advancing our national and international practices,” explained Scott Anderson, Managing Partner at Verrill. “Most of our growth to-date has been organic with many joining us from big law for a better culture and increased value for their clients. Attracting and retaining top talent through a collaborative and collegiate culture is part of our secret sauce to succeeding in this increasingly competitive market.”

Verrill was ranked the 30th largest law firm in Massachusetts in 2023 by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly and has only grown since, adding another nearly 10 attorneys in Boston, including five environmental attorneys in August.
