Vermont’s Response to Intense Inland Flooding: Third in the Resilient Waters Series – Case Studies in Flood Modeling and Adaptation
Verrill’s Peter Vetere will be moderating the EBC’s upcoming Climate Change Committee and Water Resources Committee webinar. During the webinar, attendees panelists will be exploring how diverse entities are tackling the complex challenges of flooding, from the state level to municipalities and private developers. Through real-world case studies, speakers will delve into how to define and model flood risks, from inland stormwater and groundwater issues to coastal storm surge threats. Presentations will showcase innovative design solutions and practical adaptive strategies that can be applied in both inland and coastal communities.
“Episode Three” in the series will explore Vermont’s response to the intense inland flooding the state has experienced over the last few years. Speakers will address the Resilience Initiative for Vermont Empowerment and Recovery (RIVER), a community-focused project led by Vermont Emergency Management and regional planning commissions to connect municipalities with engineering support to secure funding for implementing locally-led flood reduction and resilience projects. Specific focus will be on examples of FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) projects and property buyouts for floodplain restoration in Barre, Vermont. The program will conclude with a discussion of the availability and limitations of state and federal funding for this work.
The webinar will conclude with a robust moderated discussion.
