Verrill Welcomes Health Care & Life Sciences Attorney Elpida Velmahos
BOSTON, Massachusetts – Verrill is pleased to announce that Elpida Velmahos has joined the firm’s Health Care & Life Sciences Group as an Associate, resident in the firm’s Boston office.
Velmahos works closely with clients to navigate complex federal and state healthcare laws, including the Affordable Care Act, Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark Law, False Claims Act, HIPAA/HITECH, Corporate Practice of Medicine requirements, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services regulations and guidance, and state licensing and board requirements.
Velmahos advises clients on regulatory approvals and compliance matters, including Determination of Need proceedings, Change of Ownership transactions, FDA recalls, and healthcare privacy and governance issues. She also counsels healthcare businesses on entity formation and organizational structures, including professional corporations, professional limited liability companies, and management services organization/friendly-PC arrangements that support relationships between clinical providers and non-clinical business entities.
Her practice includes representing buyers and sellers in healthcare transactions, where she assists with transaction structuring, due diligence, and the preparation and negotiation of purchase agreements and ancillary compliance documentation. Velmahos also drafts and negotiates a wide variety of commercial agreements, including employment agreements, master services agreements, vendor contracts, confidentiality agreements, letters of intent, restrictive covenant agreements, commercial leases, and operating agreements.
In addition, Velmahos advises healthcare clients on emerging issues affecting the industry, including concierge medicine and private practice models, medical spas, IV therapy providers, weight management businesses, and the contractual, privacy, and regulatory implications of artificial intelligence technologies. She regularly prepares and updates healthcare compliance documentation, including business associate agreements, privacy notices, consent forms, and related practice policies.
Velmahos received her law degree from Suffolk University Law School, her Master’s in Public Health from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, and her undergraduate degree from Boston University. Velmahos’ multidisciplinary legal and public health background provides clients with a practical understanding of both the regulatory and operational challenges facing healthcare organizations. She is fluent in Spanish and Greek.
