        Verrill Welcomes Jeffrey A. Smagula, Experienced Health Care and Life Sciences Attorney, Former Health Plan Compliance Executive

        (May 12, 2021) – Verrill is pleased to welcome Jeffrey A. Smagula to the firm’s Boston office as Counsel in its nationally recognized Health Care & Life Sciences Group.

        Jeff Smagula brings to Verrill years of industry experience he gained while serving in key posts at a global life sciences company and most recently at one of the top three health insurance plans in Massachusetts. He has deep experience with U.S. and international privacy regulations, export and trade compliance, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act compliance, provider reimbursement and health insurance, as well as the design, implementation, and operation of sophisticated compliance systems. From his in-house positions and through experience gained as a junior partner at the Boston office of a global law firm, Jeff dealt with an array of federal, state, and international administrative and regulatory agencies to help clients achieve their business and strategic objectives. With this background, Jeff Smagula is also uniquely positioned to assist clients confronting a variety of legal compliance risks and design by developing and enhancing legal compliance and privacy programs for participants in the health care and life sciences industries.

        Most recently, Jeff Smagula was Vice President, Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer at Tufts Health Plan and prior to that he served as Head of Trade Compliance and Assistant General Counsel at EMD Millipore Corporation. Jeff began his legal career as a member of the Litigation Department and Government Investigations Practice Group at WilmerHale LLP and while at the firm worked for six months as a Special Assistant District Attorney at the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office.

        Jeff earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Harvard College and a Juris Doctor with honors from the Georgetown University Law Center.
